We Tell People to Have a Relationship With Themselves. Then We Give Them the Wrong Tools.
We've all heard it: Love yourself. Build a relationship with yourself. You are your most important relationship. And almost immediately, the conversation shifts from relationship to habits. Start a gratitude practice. Repeat affirmations. Journal every morning. Meditate for ten minutes. Track your thoughts. Practice self-care. None of those things are inherently bad. I've done every one of them. Some genuinely helped me regulate my emotions or interrupt destructive patterns.
